ERGO MANTIS – Carbon Fibre Tribar Arm Rests
£139.00 – £199.00
The Ergo Mantis Carbon Fibre arm rest models have been developed to accommodate riders who use the popular upright forearm or ‘Mantis’ Tribar position. The majority of riders who visit a Wind Tunnel or undergo Aero specific track testing to improve their cda figure will adopt this position to some degree. The optimum upward angle of the forearm will differ from rider to rider due to individual influencing factors such as body shape as well as flexibility. There’s no set rule to follow here but Ergo Mantis will work effectively with even the shallowest of forearm angles.
Once a rider adopts this position it becomes more comfortable to move the tribar arm rests right back to the elbow joint as opposed to under the forearm, with many riders actually preferring instead to perch the elbow in the middle of the arm rest. This usually results in excessive unwanted ‘fore aft’ movement and a degree of instability due to a smaller contact point.
Ergo Mantis arm rests securely hold a rider locked into their most aerodynamic position effortlessly. This is possible through the clever ergonomic support design that wraps around the back of the elbow as well as the side. This comfortable solution allows a rider greater focus upon the race effort itself. These rests also isolate the elbow joint from fore aft movement which even at a micro level is wasting energy and therefore compromising efficient power delivery. A truly bio mechanic advantage never tapped until now.
We offer two variants of the Ergo Mantis – An un-drilled mono platform that measures 195mm at its maximum width for those with a very narrow optimised forearm position and regular left/right paired arm rests for those adopting a wider or narrower elbow position. The mono platforms one piece design also acts as a brace bar which further stabilizes the cockpit, instability being something of an issue with tall stacked tribar arrangements. For level set integrated cockpits we can supply 10, 15 or 20 degree Aluminium wedges to fit under the arm rest. Regular paired arm rests come pre-drilled and allow a good degree of width as well as fore/aft adjustment but can be easily altered slightly by a competent bike mechanic. Pairs can also be supplied un-drilled for a custom bike fit and are universal when supplied this way. Your existing allen hex bolts may be suitable for re-use when using Ergo Mantis without our angled wedges but new M5 bolts are supplied with wedges as standard. If any bolts look too short for your tribar mounts please consult a bike mechanic before fitting. If your tribar arrangement calls for larger diameter M6 bolts then the pre-drilled armrest holes can be made larger by passing a 6mm drill bit through the holes that are needed for your position.

ERGOMANTIS – HELPFUL ADVICE
ErgoMantis arm rests are sold with the option of an easy fit pre-drilled base or as un-drilled blanks intended for an exact custom bike fit to dial in your optimal aero position. When choosing blanks your bike fitter should be able to decide the exact final drilling configuration to suit your position and your tribar mounting system.
When choosing the pre-drilled option please refer to our drilling configuration diagram to satisfy yourself that they will have the correct amount of adjustment to achieve your intended final position. The base holes are drilled for M5 bolts but can easily be run through with a 6mm drill bit to accept M6 bolts which are used on some tribar systems. The holes have a lateral spacing of 15mm & 20mm and fore/aft centres of 10mm which include a central slot to help accommodate a wider range of bolt centres . This configuration works particularly well with our range of angled armrest wedges but also fit most current tribar mounting systems.
Armrest wedges with angles of 10, 15 & 20 degrees are available to purchase along with your rests and are typically required when fitting ErgoMantis to achieve a comfortable aero optimised position. It is better to have a wedge that is slightly too shallow than too steep. Too steep is likely to result in pressure pain in the forearm caused by the front edge of the armrest.
If simply swapping your existing armrests for ErgoMantis then remove one of your rests and adopt your race position while ideally on a home trainer. Have someone assist by slipping the ErgoMantis under your elbow into the correct position ensuring that the back up-stand of the rest comes into contact with the back of your elbow/upper arm. Hold in place while lifting from your race position. Now move the rest to accommodate the nearest pre-drilled holes and screw into position with the bolts provided or your existing bolts if suitable. Then simply fit the opposite rest using the same holes.
If using the un-drilled version then again hold the rest in place in your race position then use your pre-determined bolt centre dimensions (width & depth) to mark the rests base before safely drilling with the rest fully secured preferably in a vice. You may or may not need to countersink the holes depending on your bolt type. We strongly recommend that a bike mechanic/ fitter or a qualified person drills the carbon rest base when fitting the un-drilled blanks. When drilling use a smaller 2mm-3mm pilot bit first before using the final 5mm or 6mm drill bit depending on the size of your fixing bolts (typically M5 or M6).
If changing your current traditional tribar position over to a Mantis TT position we advise that you are guided by a body fit specialist/aero fit specialist who has experience with achieving a comfortable efficient aero position. When fitted correctly you’ll enjoy a higher degree of comfort with a secure dialled in aero position that can be ridden for extended periods of time such as that required in Long Course Triathlon.
